Felt making with Jan Hicks - 14 October
Beginners will learn how to make a piece of flat felt and using half-felts to create decoration and pictures. We will also cover addition of other fibers and felting onto fabrics. Those with more experience might like to use plastic resists to create 3D pieces, such as bags and vessels. There will be plenty of individual tuition, so you should be able to explore whatever technique interests you most. You will be able to make more than one piece during the day.
Additional costs/materials/information
Raw materials will be available on the day. Wool tops cost £3.50/100 g – and it goes a long way. You are welcome to bring any tops or fleece that you have, but please do not bring unwashed fleece. If you buy tops make sure it is suitable for felt making – superwash wool is sometimes sold as tops for spinning and it has been treated so that it will not felt! Bring loosely woven fabrics such as muslin or chiffon or scraps of lace to incorporate, and a selection of threads and yarns and scissors.
You will also need a couple of old towels, a bar of soap, a bamboo roller blind or a large piece of bubble wrap (or both), a water spray or plastic milk bottle with holes in the lid, and old net curtain or similar. You will need plastic bags to take wet things home in. I have all materials available for loan, so don’t go out and buy anything specially for the class!
