Petra Baker
Spinner, dyer and weaver
Petra is a spinner and weaver now based in Cockermouth having recently arrived from East Scotland where she found inspiration in the coastal landscape and the Angus Glens. Her shawls, wraps and soft furnishings are all inspired by nature and Petra is delighted to now be in the rich landscape of the Lake District.
She likes to source her raw fleece as local as possible, and British, but will also use regenerative wool from reputable small farmers.
When she couldn’t source the right colours for her items, she started to dye the wool herself, sometimes using acid dyes or more recently using natural dyes. Petra uses seasonal inspiration and takes plenty of photographs for reference. When spinning, she makes sure that there is a variety of textures available and will use her spinning wheel or a drop spindle to create these textures.
At the weaving stage, she uses a method called freeform or inspirational weaving, in other words there are no patterns to follow. This makes every item unique, one of a kind.
In the shop you will find items woven with natural wool colours, such as the cushions. Petra also has shawls/wraps in the shop which use a selection of natural coloured and hand dyed wools. The items have a lovely drape and varied textures which include locks and sometime a little Angelina fibre to add some sparkle! You are also able to purchase hand spun wool, natural coloured, and natural dyed wool.
Petra is looking forward to expanding her collection for the shop.
Petra joined the Wool Clip at the beginning of 2025 and is excited to be part of the Cooperative with other creators who all love to work with wool.
