25 Years

We’re celebrating 25 years of The Wool Clip co-operative throughout 2026 in a number of ways.

• Special creations in the Caldbeck shop (and online) - these are being sold in aid of the 25th Anniversary Awards fund and share a colour scheme;

• An exhibition, The Wool Clip: 25 Years in the Making, at Farfield Mill. This opened on Wednesday, 2 September and runs until Sunday 1 November;

• Anniversary Awards for those starting out with their own wool-based businesses.

The first tranche of Awards (£250 each) was announced early in September (see blog below). Further applications are encouraged - we plan to announce a second tranche in December. Thank you everyone who has contributed to Award funding so far:

Past and current members of The Wool Clip;
Generous visitors to the Caldbeck shop and a WI group to whom a member made a presentation.

Carol Burns from Wigton is the latest artist to feature as one of The Wool Clip co-operative's Spotlight guests. Carol (70) captures north Cumbrian landscapes, wildlife and the changing seasons in both oils and watercolours and she was a founder member of the Fountain Gallery in Wigton. A selection of Carol's landscape paintings from around Skiddaw, Caldbeck and the surrounding area is now on display and for sale along with her prints and cards in The Wool Clip's Caldbeck shop.

"I met Carol over 30 years ago when we were both youth workers in Wigton," says Marion Rae, a member of The Wool Clip. "I have admired her work at the Fountain Gallery for a number of years and am delighted to have her as our Spotlight artist."

Carol has lived and worked in and around Wigton all her life and she comes from a farming family. She helped to establish Fountain Gallery in the town, also a co-operative of local artists, in 2011. "I was born and brought up in the parish of Westward, living at High Hall Farm. My inspiration comes from the beautiful place where we live, and the ever-changing seasons. Being a farmer's daughter, I was involved with all aspects of farming, which I loved. I also enjoyed visiting family members who farmed at Fell Side, near Caldbeck, helping with the prize-winning Herdwicks."

Carol's Spotlight exhibition will be on display and for sale in the shop throughout April until the end of May.
